Plant Notes:Beach Morning Glory is a native herbaceous perennial stoloniferous vine in the Morning Glory family (Convolvulaceae). It can be found in coastal Alabama. Beach Morning Glory occurs on sandy beaches and dunes. It is a perennial with creeping stems up to 30 feet in length that root at the nodes, and short upright branches. The stems are glabrous and green or purple-red in color. Leaves are alternate, petiolate, oblong to pandurate in outline, with entire margins. The leaves are glabrous and coriaceous. The large flowers are solitary from the axils of the leaves. Sepals are rounded, coriaceous, and overlapping. The white flower is campanulate with a yellow throat. The fruit is a capsule with 2-4 large hairy seed. Beach Morning Glory is occasionally available from native plant nurseries. It can also be grown from seed or sections of the stem. Beach Morning Glory is an attractive native perennial that is drought and salt tolerant. It does well in low-nutrient soils, and is an important sand stabilizer. It can be used in coastal landscapes for dune restoration and as a groundcover.—A. Diamond
