Plant Notes:Moore’s Hybrid Pitcher Plant is a native herbaceous perennial in the Pitcher-Plant family (Sarraceniaceae). It is a naturally occurring hybrid between the Whitetop Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia leucophylla Rafinesque) and the Yellow Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia flava Linnaeus). It can be expected where ever the parents co-occur. Moore’s Hybrid Pitcher Plant occurs in bogs, along streams, in seeps, in low pine woods, and on roadsides. It is most frequent on sites that have been disturbed. It is a perennial from a short rhizome. The phyllodia (non-trap leaves) are flattened, green in color, non-inflated, and lanceolate in outline. The trap leaves are erect, hollow, tubular in shape with a circular orifice protected by an arched hood. They are orangey-yellow to greenish in color with a dark red throat patch. The leaves have areolations (white “windows”) near the orifice much like the Whitetop Pitcher Plant. The nodding flowers are solitary on a long scape and orangish in color. The 5 persistent sepals are orange-yellow in color. The 5 orange-red to nearly red petals droop between the lobes of the enlarged style disc. The fruit is a capsule. Moore’s Hybrid Pitcher Plant is available from nurseries specializing in carnivorous plants. It requires a wet acidic soil in full sun.—A. Diamond.
Taxonomic Notes:A natural hybrid between S. flava L. and S. leucophylla Raf. although it was first created and named from a greenhouse cross. Named for David Moore, a Scottish Botanist who hybridized the parents.
Status:Native
