This taxon was first collected in the Alabama flora by Melanie Spaulding from Cleburne County in 2021.  The noteworthy collection was included in Spaulding & Triplett (2022) as I. sanguinea Hornem. ex Donn, now consdiderd to be a synonym of I. sibirica (Boltenkov et al 2020).
