Taxonomic Notes:

Sand Spikemoss [Bryodesma arenicola (Underwood) Soják] is one member of a complex of closely related taxa also including Riddell's Spikemoss [B. corallinum (Riddell) Weakley] and Spiny Spikemoss [B. acanthonota (Underwood) Škoda], a taxon not known from the Alabama flora.  The complex ranges from North Carolina to Texas and members have been treated differently by various authors. Specimens in south Alabama seem seem to be identifiable with B. arenciola but some may be intermediates between B. arenicola and B. acanthonota, a common phenomenon documented by Tryon (1955) between those two taxa in Georgia and Florida.--B.R. Keener
